Do you believe in the power of words? Have you ever thought about the effect your words have on your brain? There are scientists who believe that your choice of words has a deep impact on your brain. In other words, the words you utter can literally change your brain’s structure.

Dr. Andrew Newberg is a neuroscientist at Thomas Jefferson University who together with Mark Robert Waldman, a communication expert, collaborated on a book called “Words Can Change Your Brain.” In their book they write, “a single word has the power to influence the expression of genes that regulate physical and emotional stress.”

When you speak using positive and loving words you can shape and even change your brain functions by strengthening the areas in your frontal lobe and by increasing the cognitive reasoning of your brain as well. So, speaking in a kind and loving manner by using positive words and skipping the negative ones can boost the motivational centers in your brain thus alter its shape.

On the other hand, if you use negative words and you speak in a bad way, using curse and malignant words – you are stopping your brain to produce some of the neurochemicals that are related to preventing stress. In other words, you are hardwiring your brain to worry constantly and be overwhelmed and under stress.

That being said, when you allow negative thoughts and words into your mind, you are extending the activity in your brain’s amygdala – the fear center. This will increase the production of stress hormones into your system. These neurotransmitters and hormones interrupt your logic and the normal functioning of your brain.

“Angry words send alarm messages through the brain, and they partially shut down the logic-and-reasoning centers located in the frontal lobes,” the authors wrote.

When you implement positive words into your life, your perception of yourself and of the world will change for the better. This will lead you to see always the good in other people and to find the good thing in any situation.

Contrary, if you allow negative words to surround your life, you will be always full of doubt and suspicion about everything around you.

So, if you are at a place where you are not satisfied with your life or with yourself, you should change your reality by changing your words. You may be shocked to find that it is this simple to change your life for the better. Like they said, change your words, change your life! Only you have the power to do it!
