Feeling low is something that happens to all of us. Whether you suffer from depression or you’re just going through a rough patch, feeling depressed can greatly affect your everyday life. It can get to the point where you just don’t know how to cope anymore.

When you’re feeling down, it can seem like you just can’t deal with the world. Thankfully, there are small things that you can do to help yourself. These are 7 ways to cope with life when you’re feeling depressed.

1. Give it a Name

When you fear naming something, you give it more power. Don’t say that you’re fine or that you’re just tired when you know that you’re not, call it what it is. If you admit that you’re feeling down or a bit depressed, you take away so much of the control that it has over you.

2. Talk to Someone

Talking is one of the best things that you can do for your mental health. It helps to get all the negativity out of your head and into the open. By doing that, everything will seem a lot clearer and become easier to deal with.

3. Try Gentle Exercise

Being more active isn’t just good for your body, it’s been proven to help mental health too. Exercising is probably the last thing that you want to do, so try something light. You can do yoga or go for a stroll.

4. Leave the House

I know you’d much rather stay inside and pretend that the outdoors doesn’t exist but staying indoors for too long is seriously damaging to your mental wellbeing. If you can, try to go outside for a bit, even if it’s just to the nearest shop.

5. Go Easy on Yourself

When you’re feeling low, you’re more inclined to be extremely hard on yourself for all the things that you’re not doing. You need to remember that it’s okay to not feel okay sometimes and that you’re not in control of it. Give yourself a little credit for doing the best that you can.

6. Eat Healthy Food

A healthy mind starts with a healthy body. It can be hard to get the energy to cook if you’re feeling depressed but do your best to eat as healthy as you can. If you feel yourself craving comfort foods like chips or chocolate, try having some fruit or nuts instead.

7. Ask for Support

As much as you want to, you can’t get through this alone. There are people around you that would love to help you, so let them. Ask for people’s support when you need it so that you can start feeling better as quickly as possible.

You don’t have to have a mental illness to feel depressed, it can happen to anyone. Therefore, it’s best to know the ways to combat your low mood when it feels like the world is just too much to handle. Doing these 7 things will help you to get back out there as soon as you can.
