Stop Complaining, You’re Lucky To Be American

SHARE

In our modern age, everyone feels compelled to have an opinion about everything. Social media has given people a platform to have their voices heard and share their stories of injustice. Because of that, many people become so easily outraged that they forget to take a moment to step back and take a look at what’s really going on.

One of the things that I often hear people become enraged over is “how hard it is” to be an American citizen. Quite honestly, it’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. You really need to stop complaining, you’re lucky to be American.

A Life of Luxury

I was woken up yesterday morning by the alarm ringing on my iPhone. Before I got up, I checked social media and had a quick look at the news for about 10 minutes. Then, I had a nice coffee, a good, filling breakfast, got dressed and made my way to work.

After work, I drove to the gym where I worked out for about an hour before driving home. My apartment was warm, despite how cold it was outside, so I decided to have a nice, hot shower. Finally, I settled down to watch one of my favorite shows before getting into bed and going to sleep.

Most of you probably have days that are pretty similar to mine. There may be some differences here and there, but the main aspect stays the same – you have everything that you need to feel happy and comfortable.

Some People Have Nothing

So, you may not have had enough money to get your hair done or you might not have been able to get your favorite chocolates. Maybe you’re just surviving with the bare minimum and barely making ends meet. There’s no denying that that can be difficult, but there are so many bigger problems going on in the world.

Take Syria for example. Most people there have absolutely nothing. They live in disgusting conditions, don’t have access to basic necessities, and often don’t even know where their next meal will come from. To make matters worse, they live in constant fear of being bombed or shot down.

If the people living there had all the things that we have in America, would they complain? No, they wouldn’t. They’d understand that a lot of what we have are luxuries, even if most of us want to view them as necessities. The people who live in unfit conditions would be sick to the stomach if they heard us complain about our petty problems.

America Isn’t Perfect

I’m not saying there aren’t problems here, of course there are. No country in the entire world has no problems. However, we have so much here that other people would kill for. We have clean water, we have food, we have shelter and security.

Women here can work and make an equal wage to men, whereas some women in other countries aren’t even allowed to work. LGBTQ people are being executed in other countries, but here they’re allowed to get married. People here are fighting for their right to “free the nipple” but in some places, you’ll be killed for unveiling your face.

No, America isn’t perfect, but it sure has a lot of perks that other countries don’t. There are always ways that we can improve and make people’s lives better here in the US. However, that doesn’t mean that we should forget to be grateful for everything that we have here. You’re lucky to be an American, so don’t ever forget that.
