Success means something different to everyone. For some, it may mean becoming a CEO, and for others, it may mean raising a happy child. No matter what your definition of success may be, however, you naturally still want to achieve it.
Despite the obvious differences in goals, the road to success is often the same for everyone. It takes a few key steps and one key principle to get there. The only way to live your best life is by taking responsibility for yourself.
How You See The World Matters
How do you view life? Some people believe that life is simply happening to them, while others believe that life is happening for them. At first glance, the distinction between those two outlooks can be hard to make. However, the deeper you look at it, the more you’ll see just how opposite these two things are.
People who see life as happening for them usually try to take control. This is their life and they’re going to own it. On the other hand, people who see it as happening to them often just accept occurrences as they happen. They believe that life is something unchangeable and they just need to accept that.
Change Your Perspective
Think of this scenario: you’ve been trying to lose weight for months. After a huge amount of dedication and hard work, you finally lose those 10 pounds that you’ve been trying to shed. Because of that, you feel more confident in your abilities. You start to realize that you really can do everything you want to do. Why not go for that promotion at work or even start your own business?
You see, although losing weight and starting a business are two different things, it takes similar steps to get there. Shedding those extra 10 pounds took dedication, time, patience, and effort. Starting a business also takes those same things, and so does anything else that you want to achieve.
If you begin to realize that you really can accomplish whatever you set your mind to, you’ll finally have the drive to do it. Shift your perspective from believing that you can’t change your own life because you really can. You have the power to take control of your destiny and all it takes is a change of mind.
Looking back at our weight loss scenario, did life lose that weight for you? No, you did that. You went to the gym, you changed your diet, you said no when someone offered you a second slice of chocolate cake. Life will not hand you anything, so you need to learn to be proud of your own accomplishments.
If you do something terrible, that’s on you, not life. Likewise, if you achieve something great, that’s because of you too. Self-responsibility means accepting that you are in control and that you have the power to make your own decisions. If you can do that, then you will realize that you have the power to achieve everything you want.
Truly, the only way to reach success is through self-responsibility. Without it, you’ll allow life to drift by as you blindly believe that you have no way to change it. Start learning to accept responsibility for yourself today so that you can shape a brighter tomorrow for yourself.
