John Stewart is a comedian and a former host of The Daily Show. He delivered an emotional speech recently about the 9/11 first responders and shamed Congress for being inactive when it came to full funding their compensation fund.
Stewart started his speech by angrily saying how shameful it is that only a few members of the House Judiciary subcommittee were present. He then turned to the empty chairs and said:
“Sick and dying, they [first responders] brought themselves down here to speak to no one. It’s shameful. It’s an embarrassment to this country and it is a stain on this institution.”
“It would be one thing if their callous indifference and rank hypocrisy were benign but it’s not. Your indifference cost these men and women their most valuable commodity: time. It’s the one thing they’re running out of.”
The whole speech is very emotional and worth watching. And let’s hope that all the absent members of the Congress will hear his message as well.
