It’s been months since the catastrophic and devastating bushfires burned large parts of the forests in Australia and killed a staggering 1 billion wild animals. And while none of us will ever forget the heartbreaking footage of burnt forests and animals running and screaming for help, one thing is certain.
There’s still hope.
Veterinary hospitals across Australia have been overflowing with injured wild animals. But after a few months of taking care of the poor, wounded and traumatized creatures, the first recovered patients are finally being released into the wild.
One of the bravest and strongest creatures that have successfully recovered is Awen, a female koala that has been sheltered in the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital. The poor creature was admitted in October 2019 and after a few months of receiving proper healthcare and love from the hospital staff, she is finally ready to go back to where she belongs. Home.

When she first arrived in the hospital, poor Awen was all covered in burns and suffered from a Chlamydia infection. Fortunately, the creature survived. She was taken care of by people who put their best efforts to save and now, thanks to them, she is a symbol of hope and life for the entire species.
“Anwen was our first-ever female koala to be admitted during the bushfires and her recovery has been extraordinary,” said Sue Ashton, president of the Koala Hospital. “It marks a proud moment for Australia; to see our Koala population and habitat starting to recover from what was such a devastating time. To be able to release so many of our koalas back to their original habitats, even to their original tree in some cases—makes us very happy.”
