First Seedless Lychees In Australia After 20 Years Of Using Chinese Fruit Trees

Tibby Dixon, a farmer from Sarina Beach in Far North Queensland managed to develop successfully the first seedless lychee in Australia, after almost 20-years of spending $5,000 on a single fruit tree imported from China.

After that, he has developed many other lychees through cross-pollinating flowers and selective breeding over the past few decades.

His newest “design” is a seedless variety which he describes as “very flavorsome” and tasting “a bit like pineapple.”

His next challenge is growing a crop of trees to fruit on Australian farms. ‘Within a couple of years we should have enough to sell out in commercial numbers,’ he said.
