Do you consider the ‘diet’ coke to be a healthier version of the regular coke? If you do, then you are wrong. Namely, scientists have found that drinking one or more diet sodas a day is linked to a higher risk of dementia and strokes.
The study which was published in the scientific journal “Stroke” observed more than 4 000 people older than 45. They were asked to fill out questionnaires about their diet and the frequency of the food they eat while also having periodic health checkups between 1991 and 2001. Then, the scientists behind the study tracked the health of the participants over the following 10 years and discovered 81 cases of dementia and 97 of stroke.
The study also found that people who drank 1-6 artificially sweetened drinks per week had doubled the risk of strokes compared with those participants who didn’t drink diet soda. Similarly, the same results are said to be true about dementia, as diet soda drinkers have more risk for dementia than nondrinkers. However, the reasons for this are still unknown.
Of course, the results vary and are being adjusted for variables such as age, caloric intake, sex, education, diabetes, physical activity, smoking, and diet quality that might influence the risk. But no one ever said that drinking diet soda is healthy or doesn’t have any bad consequences of the health of a person.
“Just because a beverage is advertised as being healthy because it doesn’t have any sugar doesn’t mean that it is healthy,” said Matthew Pase, one of the researchers. “Artificial sweeteners may have effects in the body that we haven’t begun to explore.”
Finally, the bottom line seems to be, drink more water or tea instead of a diet soda, and never ever switch to regular soda.
