Turmeric has been used for centuries, spanning all the way back into the ancient Hindu and Chinese cultures. It is a very potent spice which contains curcumin – a substance which has been revered by scientists for quite some time.

According to research, curcumin has strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and BDNF-boosting properties which contribute to the well-being of a person. As a result of the powerful effects of curcumin, it plays a significant role in various aspects:

-It’s a great anti-aging substance
-It protects the nerves
-Can help in the treatment of arthritis
-It’s an effective supplementary for cancer

Which is more, curcumin has the potency to reduce anxiety and depression symptoms.

A study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders shows that curcumin can reduce “the overall symptoms of depression, functioning as an anxiolytic (anti-anxiety substance) as well when taken over a period of 8 weeks.”

“Curcumin’s positive antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects are likely due to its ability to normalize specific physiological pathways,” says Adrian Lopesti, Ph.D., of Murdoch University in Australia.

“It appears to elevate neurotransmitters such as serotonin while lowering stress hormones, such as cortisol, and is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Curcumin also provides protection to the brain.”

So, if you haven’t been taking turmeric so far, here’s one very good reason to start. And if you haven’t got any ideas on how to introduce it into your diet, here’s a suggestion:

TURMERIC LEMONADE

You’ll need:
-5 cups water

-4 tbsp freshly grated turmeric root
-3 tbsp raw honey
-2 tsp grated ginger
-1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
-1/2 cup orange juice (optional – for taste)

How to make it:
1.Bring the water to a boil;

2.Place the grated turmeric and ginger root into a jar that can hold hot water;
3.Pour the boiled water into the jar – allow the mixture to steep for a minimum of 10 minutes;
4.Scoop the honey into the jar and stir until it’s dissolved;
5.Strain the mixture and add the lemon juice.
6.After the tea has cooled a bit, add orange juice if desired.

So, when life gives you lemons, make some turmeric lemonade!
